Position: Specialist - General Surgery

Job Responsibilities:
- Examine patients and make diagnoses to determine the need for surgery.
- Review patient medical history and plan the best procedure for treatment.
- Evaluate and advise patients on the risk involved with having surgery.
- Perform surgical procedures to prevent or correct injury, disease, deformities and patient function while adhering to regulatory and ethical protocols.
- Follow established surgical techniques during surgery.
- Prescribe preoperative and postoperative treatment and procedures.
- Ensure sterility in the operating room, and all equipment and instruments with assistance and engaging other team members/OT staff/specialist, RMO, UHFPO
- Direct and coordinate activities of hospital staff for proper patient care.
- Oversee all treatment prior to and post-surgery, and identify associated risks.
- Maintain the highest regard for patient dignity and observe the precepts of the M
- edical Ethics on Rights for patients.
- Plan and execute disease/illness prevention and health promotion programs.
- Coordinate follow up meetings with patients and monitor health condition after surgery or treatment.
- Carry out daily ward rounds for admitted surgical/emergency patients including post- operative cases, with the support of other medical doctors, and health professionals working in the health complex
- Perform USGs and X-ray interpretation for referred cases including surgical cases, pregnant women with complications
- Provide on-the-job training to other health staff and junior doctors on; improved management practices and other quality best practices with the aim of improving patients' treatment outcomes
- Supervise and mentor nurses, medical students and other mid-level healthcare professionals;
- Support health information management systems both for the MOHFW as well as IOM project; this should include but not limited to documentation and reporting of maternal and new-borne morbidity and mortality information.
- Attend surgical emergencies by being the first on-call if required.
- Participate actively in existing health sector coordination mechanisms and liaises with health sector stakeholders to contribute to
- addressing the unmet needs in managing surgical cases
- optimizing the allocation of available resources,
- developing clinical protocols, guidelines and standards;
- Assist to prepare periodic reports and other requests for information as required
- Support the schedules and maintenance of medical equipment, surgical suite (theatre), including operating, wash-up, waiting rooms, and anaesthetic and sterilizing equipment.
- Liaise and coordinates with local Government and health authorities and other stakeholders with a view to strengthening of health care delivery systems
- Assist the National Programme Officer in project monitoring and identifying priority health needs and other activities including but not limited to regular disease outbreak monitoring and reporting to the health authorities and take part in health awareness campaign, etc.
- Facilitate referrals and assisted transportation of critical cases to functioning secondary health facilities or hospitals when required in accordance with organization mandate and procedures directly or through health partners;
- Inform the secondary referral center about the referred case with significant medical condition to ensure proper and timely patient handling at the referral center upon arrival.
- Undertake regular duty travel and assist the National Programme Officer in planning and completion of field activities competently in order to ensure a well-organized and quality health care delivery service with special attention to the vulnerable populations.
- Enter medical information and other details into health databases with maintaining confidentiality. Also required to submit daily field trip report and necessary feedback to the National Programme Officer on a regular basis.
- Performs such other relevant duties assign by the line manager and supervisor.
- Actively promote Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) standards within IOM and amongst beneficiaries served.

Educational Requirements: Completed advance university degree in Medicine with a minimum of post-graduate Degree in General Surgery from an accredited academic institution.

- Good in written communication in English and Bangla
- Computer skills in MS Word, Excel and Power Point
- Strong Interpersonal skills.
- At least three years of experience in relevant General Surgery Specialist services preferably at a secondary to tertiary level with Operation Theatre (OT) providing surgical intervention
- Knowledge and experience with working in the field of public health will be an added advantage.
- Excellent communication, analytical and interpersonal skills;
- Working experience in Cox's Bazar district and/or knowledge of the Forcedly Displaced
- Myanmar Nationals (FDMNs) will be a plus
